The History of Glanbrook

Glanford and Binbrook were first known as part of Upper Canada in the late 1700s. Once the area was deforested, it was used for agriculture. However, unlike other regions in the area, Glanbrook experiences a harsher climate, making it less ideal for fruits and wine production.

During the Second World War, Glanbrook was home to an airfield run by the Royal Canadian Air Force as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war, the airfield shifted from military to civilian, finding use as a cargo, regional commute, charter, light aircraft, and international airport.

Aviation is a popular interest in Glanbrook and in the 1970s, local volunteers created the Canadian Warplane Heritage with a collection of vintage aircraft. After a fire in the 1990s, the hangar was rebuilt and privatized, eventually becoming John C. Munro International Airport.

In 2001, Glanbrook was amalgamated along with several other communities in Hamilton into the new City of Hamilton.
