With excellent schools, a variety of real estate options, and fantastic local conveniences and amenities, it’s no surprise that Burlington is continually ranked among the top mid-sized cities to live in Canada. In fact, in 2019, Burlington took the top spot according to the annual list published by MacLeans

Situated between two interesting geographical locations—the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario—Burlington is an exciting and comfortable place to live. Whether you love being close to nature, or you prefer vibrant city life, Burlington real estate has something for everyone.

As the largest of the four municipalities that make up the regional municipality of Halton, Burlington as a city takes pride in values like multiculturalism, community, and diverse economic offerings. With proximity to other west GTA cities and Toronto itself, Burlington is an excellent option for families, professionals, and retirees alike who want to stay close to the action and live in a safe and comfortable mid-size city environment.

The History of Burlington

Much like the rest of the area, Burlington has a rich and exciting history and has played a significant role in the development of modern-day Canada. Burlington sits on the land of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, who were the original inhabitants of the area hundreds of years ago.

In 1669, the area was settled by French explorer, Rene Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, which is where La Salle Park gets its name. About 100 years later, Mohawk military leader, Joseph Brant was granted a significant tract of land in the area, which ushered in the next couple hundred years of Loyalist settlement.

After the American Revolutionary War, the area saw a wave of Loyalist and British immigration, with many new residents clearing significant land to create farmlands. Between 1820 and 1850, timber was the area’s biggest export.

The 1900s saw Burlington transform into a major agricultural centre as well as other industries such as basket weaving, canning, ice harvesting, and more. Today, these industries are no longer part of the city’s diverse economy. Instead, Burlington has become a prosperous urban centre with a population of almost 200,000 people.

Where is Burlington?

Burlington is situated on the northwestern shores of Lake Ontario between Oakville and Hamilton. With Milton located to the north, Burlington is the largest municipality in the greater regional municipality of Halton and also comprises the western end of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Burlington is also considered to be the centre of what is known as the “Golden Horseshoe” area, tucked away between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario.

Burlington Economy

Along with neighbouring cities like Hamilton, Burlington, Ontario has a strong, diverse economy that includes a variety of industries and large employers. Some of the most prominent economic drivers in the area include food processing, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, environmental, packaging, electronics, and more.

Among the largest employers in the area are businesses such as Cogeco Cable, Evertz Microsystems, and Boehringer Ingelheim. However, there are also numerous large public sector employers in the area including the Halton District School Board and Joseph Brant Medical Centre.

With such a diverse economy, Burlington is home to many well-paying jobs that appeal to young professionals and families looking to establish roots.

Burlington Demographics

Burlington has a population of about 200,000 people as of 2021. Like many cities in the GTA, Burlington is a diverse and active city. At 24.5%, Burlington meets the national average for minors under 18, and at 15.4% has a higher population of seniors than the national average.

Burlington Neighbourhoods

Within the greater area of Burlington, we see many smaller neighbourhoods and micro-communities that offer significant benefits depending on your unique needs and lifestyle. For example, if you’re looking for exclusivity and trendy condos, look in Downtown Burlington or Corporate.

Families would enjoy the quiet streets, access to green space, large lots, and homes in neighbourhoods like Alton Village, Elizabeth Gardens, Headon Forest, Brant Hills, and Longmoor.

Those seeking a more exclusive address should look in many sought-after neighbourhoods like Millcroft and The Orchard, while commuters would do well in communities such as Pinedale and the Plains.

Neighbourhoods like Dynes and Palmer are often overlooked compared to some of the other, more flashy, Burlington communities, but they are both up-and-coming neighbourhoods with excellent potential. While other neighbourhoods like Aldershot were once known for housing an ageing population are now becoming revitalized with younger families moving in.
